On September 19, 1961, a referendum was held in Jamaica to determine whether Jamaica would continue her association with the other nine island units of the Federation of the West Indies. The results showed that the electorate had decided against continuing Federation membership. This study works to illumine the process by which the decision was made and the consideration of the possible impact of the action upon the politics of economic development in the emergent nations. Specifically, the study attempts to show that the decision was essentially concerned not with the status of Jamaica as a political entity, but rather with the manner in which this status would complement or hinder the process of Jamaican economic development.
