This project, Refugee Resettlement in the United States: Incorporating a Long-Term View of Integration Into Policy and Practice, analyzes refugee resettlement in the United States and is focused around refugees who have been resettled here. The history of refugee resettlement, policy construction, and the current refugee resettlement framework of the United States will be outlined. In doing this, the aim is to identify shortcomings present within the United States refugee resettlement process and illustrate the way that policy, successfully or unsuccessfully, plays out at the societal level. The aims outlined above combine toward larger goals of providing a holistic view of refugee resettlement and offering solutions to problems identified in the United States refugee resettlement program. In addition to offering solutions, the hope is to provide a platform to begin discussing and brainstorming ideas for improving refugee resettlement in the United States. The means for accomplishing this are to examine each facet of refugee resettlement, the process in its complex entirety, through academic research and qualitative interviews. Generally, when one thinks of refugee resettlement, they think of a person moving from a state of conflict, seeking refuge in another country, and being set up in a new home somewhere outside their country of origin. While these are all components of refugee resettlement, the movement of a refugee from a refugee camp or intermediary country to their final destination in the United States requires a number of actors, both state and non-state, and steps that are often overlooked. Some of the research questions guiding this project are: What does the process of refugee resettlement in the United States entail? What are common problems faced by refugees during the resettlement process? What is the role of the refugee throughout the process of resettlement? What does long-term integration of refugees into United States society look like?
