Abstract
This literature review compares three methodologies that are used in planning bus services. The three approaches include statistical, participatory, and modeling approaches. The process of developing analytical approaches is also examined, with critical focus given to choosing criteria and indicators. The three methods are analyzed within a theoretical framework that incorporates Actor Network Theory, pragmatist theories, paradigms of mobility and accessibility, and equity goals. The goal of this literature review is not to argue that one methodology is better than another but to promote understanding between disciplinary approaches to transportation planning. As bus services are highly complex, it is important to look at transportation problems from a variety of lenses and to promote understanding between the different parties involved.
