The Effect of Perceived Motivation of Teachers on the Motivation of Students

This research addresses the topic of effective teaching, more specifically, it analyzes the role the attitudes of teachers play in the motivation of their students. Studies have found that when certain factors of attitude such as charisma, positivity, and interest are displayed by teachers, it can foster a positive classroom environment as well as productive student-teacher relationships. The perception of a positive classroom environment on the part of the students plays a strong part in increasing their motivation for the class, enhancing their academic performance through the students’ increased interest and passion. When the teachers themselves are intrinsically motivated to teach, they unconsciously portray their genuine interest and enthusiasm in their attitude, cultivating an environment and student-teacher relationships that maximize the motivation of their students. In this current study, a survey was distributed to determine which observable displays of the teacher’s motivation in the classroom environment were the most significant predictors of the student’s level of motivation. The survey measured how the students perceived the teacher’s motivation through attitudes reflecting interest, charisma, and positivity manifested in the classroom environment and student-teacher relationships and the students’ self-reported levels of motivation. The positive correlation between teacher and student motivation indicated that if students perceived their teachers having higher levels of motivation, the students reported having higher levels of motivation as well whereas low levels of perceived motivation in teachers were reflected in low levels of self-reported motivation. By identifying what behaviors reflecting these attitudes are the most influential in predicting the students’ motivation, effective teaching can be better understood and enhanced.
