Reassessment of Photodissociation Product Vector Correlations as Influenced by N,N-dimethylnitrosamine (DMN) Conformational Changes at 355 nm

Investigation of the photodissociation of a molecule can be performed by measuring the vector correlations between the parent molecule and its photoproduct. The dissociative process of dimethylnitrosamine (DMN) at 355 nm was observed using a velocity-mapped ion imaging apparatus and the vector correlations between the parent transition dipole (μ), the photoproduct velocity (v), and the photoproduct angular momentum (j). Previous studies utilizing alternative experimental techniques by Hossain et al and Lavi et al resulted in a disagreement amongst the μ-j vector correlation. Further investigation yielded results in agreement with Hossain et al. The μ-j correlation was found to be about 0, the μ-v correlation to be -0.26 ± 0.02, and the remainder correlations v-j and μ-v-j quadratic to be near 0.
