The Effects of Demonstrating Physical and Mental Stability During Competition and Practice in Performances

To pinpoint how athletes become successful – reaching their goals - there are many differences when comparing them to less successful athletes. A successful athlete has the willingness, perseverance, and commitment to go through a process that allows one to achieve their team and individual goals (De Swardt, 2008). He or she can view anxiety as beneficial, allowing them to become more highly determined and committed to their sport (Hoffman, 2013). Being able to demonstrate stability both physically and mentally is crucial if one wants to be successful. There must be effective thinking and responding throughout practices and games. With this mentality, there will be higher levels of motivation in athletes and more consistent performances. There is a self-fulfilling prophecy that the more one struggles, the more it will affect performances, and the more contagious negative thoughts will be, leading to failure. These athletes lack self-confidence and will overgeneralize and create “should” statements (McCabe, 2016). Learning to be aware of thoughts and their patterns builds confidence. A change of attitude and the ability to control one’s thoughts are essentials to becoming mentally tougher, leading to a higher level of self-confidence. This will help prepare him or her for their next big obstacle (Thelwell & Greenlees, 2003). In this case if athletes become more self-confident, they will be better at competing than those who lack confidence.
