Abstract
The author discusses the development of her novel by explaining some personal history: “My novel does start off with two girls going on a road trip to Yosemite, which is based on a true experience of mine and what helped inspire the plot. Our car did break down and we stupidly did get into a stranger’s truck, but luckily he did drop us off at the nearest lodging area. We did not join a cult that summer. Although, when I was younger my mom would take me to Scientology events since we lived a couple of blocks away from their main building. So, I grew up seeing them and learning some of their ideologies. Also, I noticed that Scientologists had a specific uniform, which influenced how my characters dressed. In addition, because I grew up interacting with many of the Scientologists there, it gave me an idea of how I wanted the characters in the cult to act like since Scientologists are extremely friendly and kind when speaking with them.”
