Item Brexit and How it Will Impact Women(2023-11-01) Hahn, Emma; Wheatly, DanielThe United Kingdom leaving the European Union (referred to throughout this paper as Brexit) on January 31st, 2020 will disproportionately impact women more than men. Brexit was a comprehensive upheaval of British policy, legally and economically, both of which have consequences for women specifically. This paper examines the economic causes and effects of Brexit, and how these will have an impact on women. This includes a change in gender based employment protections, like policies discouraging the female wage gap and maternity leaves. This paper also looks at the impact of the change in immigration policy on service industry wages and child care accessibility.Item How the Skin Tone of the Models in an Advertisement Play a Role in Women's Perception of the Advertisement's Trustworthiness(2019-11-01) McNett, Tori; Geremew, MenelikThe purpose of this study is to determine how the skin tone of the model(s) in an advertisement play a role in women's perception of the advertisement's trustworthiness. There are certain beauty standards that exist for women that shape the way that they perceive and interact with advertisements. Starting predominantly after WWI and fueled by the surge of cosmetic advertisements after WWII, makeup became synonymous with beauty, and since then, women have turned to advertisements as the guide on beauty standards. One problem with this, is that African American women didn't start appearing in advertisements until the 70's and at that point they were advertising products to make them seem more Eurocentric and often featured lighter-skinned African American women. Now today, natural African beauty has still not been fully integrated into advertisements. Meanwhile, Caucasian women have normalized being "tan" as beautiful, and the popularity of self-tanning products has only grown, and so has the market. The industry is now worth over $5 billion. This subject was examined through a survey, where participants evaluated example advertisements' visual appeal and _perceived trustworthiness. The purpose of the study was not revealed to the participants in order to I attempt to reduce socially desirable answers. Because of the power of advertisements as a form of media, it is important to study and continue to study race and beauty standards in advertising.Item The Effect of Government Regulation and Currency in Circulation on Banks' Liquidity and Macro Economic Activity in Zimbabwe(2018-11-01) Chipayi, Belinda; Geremew, MenelikAs technology revolutionizes the way economic agents transact and encourages cashless economies, Zimbabwe finds itself in a currency and cash crisis. After Zimbabwe's hyperinflation of 2008, the Zimbabwean Dollar was abandoned, and the government introduced a multicurrency system making the USD the main currency. The USD became scarce with time forcing the government to introduce a legal tender that would trade at par with the USD, the Zimbabwean bond notes. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe limited cash withdrawals supposedly as a measure to promote electronic payments since they are safer, faster and allow record keeping. This paper aims to then analyze the effect of this government regulation on cash holdings measured by currency in circulation (cic) and a dummy variable (d) on its consumption and investment trends. To analyze this, first, a background of Zimbabwe's economic situation is provided. The study then considers several variables (economic indicators) to perform a multiple regression. Results ·show that most data were not significant enough therefore the null hypothesis could not be rejected. However, the relationship between cic and the dependent variables showed that data was statistically significant. Thus, currency in circulation affect economic activity in Zimbabwe.Item The Effect of Remittance on the Nepalese Economy(2020-11-01) Shrestha, Arun; Geremew, MenelikThis paper examines the impact of remittance, the sending of money from immigrants back to their home countries, on the Nepalese economy. Using the time-series data of variables like real GDP, consumption, import, merchandised export, foreign aid, capital formation, and remittance from the period of 1978-2018 extracted from World Bank, the study finds that there is no evidence of economic growth from the remittance. It is because the remittance received by the family members spend the money mostly on consumption and imported items, increasing the trade deficit. However, the result shows that agriculture increases the economic growth of Nepal. The paper is based on the secondary data and information, and analyses it using the software STATA.Item The Possible Effect of Student Loans on the U.S. Economy(2019-11-01) Lull, Lezlie; Geremew, MenelikThis paper intends to investigate what, if any, possible effects the student loans can have on the United States economy. Throughout this paper, I use the method of a distributed survey involving over 150 respondents to analyze their perceptions of student loans and how those perceptions can create effects in purchasing power among the millennials who are carrying those loans. Based on the empirical analysis, I find that student loan debt has an impact in the purchasing power perceptions of these generations. There is a heavy focus on the inability to make large durable goods purchases while carrying these loans. The purchasing power these individuals have in respect to whether or not they can purchase durable goods could affect the housing and automobile market.
