Abstract
Gestures are of interest to psychologists because of their prevalence in communication, frequently emerging when a speaker is attempting to facilitate memory (Morsella & Krauss, 2004) or conceptualization (Hostetter, et al., 2007) * The Gestures as Simulated Action (GSA) framework suggests that gestures originate in sensorimotor activation (Hostetter & Alibali, 2008) * The GSA predicts that greater sensorimotor activation, even that extraneous to communicative intent, should increase gesture production Studies that show increased gesturing when objects have stronger ties to potential (Chu & Kita, 2015) or previous action (Hostetter & Alibali, 2010) support this GSA prediction
