Abstract
The establishment of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), also known as West Germany, in 1949 brought about a new era in German history. The first government was formed by a coalition of Christian Democrats and Christian Socialists with Konrad Adenauer as the first Federal Chancellor. Aligned politically and economically with the United States and Western Europe, Adenauer advocated for the formation of a military and FRG entry into NATO. The minority Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the German Protestant Church opposed rearmament. In this paper, the author addresses each of the major opposition movements from 1957 to the student protests of 1968 and the emergency acts that followed.
