Abstract
The artist writes “Body modification is universally enacted as a practice of aesthetics: cutting hair, trimming nails, piercing and tattooing, or exercising for beauty and personal pleasure. Most people alter their body in temporary ways that range from teeth brushing to taking prescription drugs. This work is about body modification in a very different sense. Each painting represents a complex belief system shared by certain subcultures and individuals who focus on the body as a physical manifestation of the "soul". These beliefs are characterized by powerful convictions which lead individuals to active physical modification of themselves and others. Many, like the artist Fakir Musafar, believe that humans have a driving, primal need to alter the body. Acting on the body is a way of exploring the self and definition of what it means to be human. This work questions the relationship between the internal and external as well as the individual's relationship to the world around them.”
