Abstract
The artist writes “We can feel so confident in our independence in one moment and so small and insecure, child like, the next. Why do we long for a time of less understanding, less control, more dependence? I’ve been thinking about the idea of documenting relationships, all of the comical “family moment” photos we take and objects we collect in an attempt to preserve an emotion, a togetherness. These photos and objects are not necessarily what we remember seeing or feeling. Memory is imperfect. As soon as a moment has passed, our mind starts making alterations, losing information and increasing importance on the details left. The gown structures are inspired by a photograph of my mother and me, taken early in my childhood. I was sitting on her lap; she held her arms around me and folded her hands with mine. I’m not sure I truly remember sitting on my mother’s lap that day. I’ve seen the photograph so many times now. But I want to remember it. Perhaps, in reconstructing the details of that moment, the matching nightgowns, a physical symbol of connection, I could recreate the real emotion and connection. The gowns reach out in anxious longing for this moment, yet are repelled by the understanding that it is lost.”
