Contamination : Subverting and Updating Fairy Tales
Abstract
The artist writes ”Contamination: Subverting and Modernizing Fairy Tales explores the progression of fairy tale art since its origin in the 17th century to modern day. I used this background of knowledge in order to inform the way in which I used subversion in my own narratives, demonstrated through paintings. My artistic narrative dissects the events that helped form my attitudes about art, delving into my fascination with eerie storybook illustration as a child. Contamination introduces some of the artistic influences that I kept in mind specifically while working on this project. My artistic process gets compounded and explained, starting from the act of selecting a story to paint and finishing with the titling of each piece. Also outlined is the narrative behind a few specific pieces - more specifically illustrating the methods behind my SIP. Ultimately, the narrative seeks to inform viewers of the historical context from which my pieces are derived, as well as the modern setting in which they have been placed.”
