College athletics have immensely grown in popularity over the last century. Athletic departments all over the country have evolved into multi-million dollar businesses, with the top programs generating huge revenues for their schools. The governing body of collegiate athletics has also become a multi-million-dollar business. The NCAA is the institution that governs almost all of collegiate athletics and is an organization that holds a lot of responsibility. The research in this SIP was done in order to gain a better understanding of the NCAA. It was important to see how the NCAA began as a governing institution for intercollegiate athletics and how the role of the NCAA increased as collegiate athletics became more popular. The project also looks into several contradictions that the NCAA has exhibited in several rulings over the last few decades in order to see how the institution has changed over time and why these rulings were made. Finally, the violations that were imposed against Kalamazoo College will be examined.
