Abstract
For my Senior Individualized Project, I was given the opportunity to plan, organize, coordinate, market, and run a winter festival event in downtown Kalamazoo through my internship at The Kalamazoo Experiential Learning Center (KELC). The event I organized was the Winter Urban Disc Golf Event, which took place on Sunday, March 1,2015 from 12:30-4:30 p.m. at the Arcadia Creek Festival Place in downtown Kalamazoo. This paper researches and explains what disc golf is and how to organize an event. To make this paper easier to follow, I have split it into two sections: a research section and an internship section. In the research portion of this project, I have given a detailed history of how the sport of disc golf came to be. Also, included in this section is an explanation of the general rules of how to play the game of disc golf. Although my event featured a mini-disc golf course the history and rules are still applicable since the size of the course does not affect the history or rules. However, what is affected is the strategy of game play. The final component of the research section features information about past disc golf events that have occurred in Kalamazoo, Michigan, which segues into the internship section of this project. The internship section is composed of many parts. It gives information about The Kalamazoo Experiential Learning Center and will feature all of the "how to" details on planning a community event, which include goals and accomplishments of the event, budgeting, marketing and promotion techniques, and event day preparations and execution. A goal of the KELC is to help build everyday foot traffic in the downtown Kalamazoo community through enjoyable and memorable events. Taking the goals of the KELC into account, we believed the Winter Urban Disc Golf Event would be a perfect way to achieve that goal. Not only would this event bring people downtown, it would also gage the number of people in the Kalamazoo community that would attend a fun, family-friendly, outdoor winter festival so we could plan future events. There are many crucial components to be aware of while planning an event, the most important parts is marketing and promoting. If the event is not promoted properly, then the turnout will be low. Event day preparations and execution is another significant part in planning an event. Making sure you have all the materials needed and the volunteers to help put on the event is essential for it to run smoothly. What I want readers to take away from my Senior Individualized Project is an understanding of what the sport of disc golf is and how to play it. I would also like to see my SIP be used as a guide for new event planners to reference when creating, organizing, and planning future events in their own community.
