Abstract
The artist writes “…….i began with painting on 4x4 feet hardwood self portraits, some were awful...and then one hit me and it waz a big break through point for me. bright colors and i thought, it waz more painterly than most of the things i had done before, and i liked this about it. and then i painted my friends and lover, in the same way...i wanted to do all these portraits of black women...looking deep, that waz a big thing for me, actually portraying them in this intense way gettin at some kind of emotion, but at the same time painting them beautifully…. when i waz painting i worked with light as bernard had said, except i worked with it differently...not so concerned with value but more with the shapes the light created onto the faces and i used specific colors to define those shapes...how i saw them in the light, and the more that i got into this, the less concerned i became with value, but the colors own intense selves...pinks, oranges, greens yellows and purple...mixing them, puttin awful colors next to each other trying to give it a beautiful feeling of its own. and some were more sucsessful than others, but in general i really liked them, for hours i would sit in that basement and just look at these faces...keita, fifi, neeshan, perlita, alethea....and i would see if i got a feeling from them, see what i liked and what i didn't, i liked the vibrant feelin ...."
