Neo-Pedestrian

Abstract

Neo-Pedestrian is a collection of ten acrylic paintings that explore the human relationship to contemporary urban environments. The paintings bring to light the aesthetic possibilities in our routine ways of seeing the world and re-present them as fundamentally abstract and vibrantly alive. My paintings are both a creative recognition of space and a reminder of what is already before us. The artists Piet Mondrian, Sean Scully, Peter Halley and Frank Stella heavily influence the work. In ways similar to the work of these artists, my paintings share an affinity for Neo-geometric conceptualism, Minimalism and Optical art. They are all created using acrylic paint on both unprimed and primed canvas. The color pallette of Neo-Pedestrian combines organic, natural colors with neon paint. The natural colors situate the work within the historical palette of traditional painting; the use of neon colors helps the pieces assert their contemporary nature as being part of the synthetic, electric world that the majority of humans now inhabit. Through this painting series, I have become aware of how much we miss by taking everyday events and occurrences for granted, by simply passing by them and never really seeing the environment we live in. My goal for the series is that viewers will exit the gallery with more open eyes and a keen recognition of the geometric and vibrant beauty that is ever-present in the pedestrian world.
