Abstract
In my work, I want to exemplify both my fascination with content and the medium of painting itself. This is because I am powerfully moved by the visual elements of painting, and provoked by the conceptual. I find a strong attraction to the physical properties of paint. Producing a complex, fixed image out of a collection of fluid, amorphous pure hues is extraordinary process. I enjoy the illusion inherent to the craft: the ability of two-dimensional art to act like a window into another world, and, conversely, painting that attempts to avoid illusion. I aim to incorporate both techniques into my work. Iam attracted to literal, visceral imagery, so I use clean lines and solid bright colors to evoke mood. I prefer to paint objects in an obvious, literal manner, isolating them on the canvas to avoid confusion or distraction. My current work focuses on the similarities between spiritual and physical hunger, through depictions of the body, religious gesture and an uncomfortable relationship with food. I am fascinated by the fetish like power of relics in the Roman Catholic Church, and its ritualistic traditions that involve consumption or asceticism. The painfully detailed rendering of my work is an attempt at to emphasize this discomfort and enlarge it, confronting the viewer with these themes.
