Abstract
This project is very close to my heart, as anxiety is something that has impacted not only my life in a large way, but also the lives of many of my family members and friends. Anxiety disorders are a form of mental illness. This simple fact is often overlooked. Mental illness has some sort of stigma attached to it. They are seen as a sign of weakness. The awareness and support behind mental illness must be increased.
Depression and anxiety is extremely prevalent across college campuses. The high stress culture that accompanies the life of a college student is a recipe for the appearance of anxiety and depression. In some ways this is good, as it can help a student learn the process of dealing with something as serious as these kinds of issues. However, to be able to deal with anxiety and depression, a strong support system is absolutely necessary. Throughout my struggles, I have had an immense level of support from many amazing people. I am lucky in that sense. Many are not. The awareness of mental health issues must be increased and more avenues for support must be available.
Within the athletic atmosphere, anxiety ought to be treated as any other illness or injury. Currently I feel that it is a sort of taboo that we often ignore and push off treatment. The treatment of anxiety disorders within athletics is a difficult process, but it is possible. This treatment process must be made aware to athletes and readily available.
