dc.description.abstractThis proposed research project investigates the presence of unconscious biases in academic chemistry as it relates to ethnicity, gender, and age. "Unconscious bias occurs when hidden behaviors influence a decision.” The presence of unconscious biases can have either a positive or negative effect on an individual depending on how they align with the biases held. In this study we will investigate if an individuals' ethnicity, gender, and age have a significant effect on how they are viewed in academic chemistry and if these subconscious opinions could have an impact on how they are treated, whether they succeed, or even if one chooses to pursue a career path in a variety of different sectors of academic chemistry. The survey method used in this study aims to determine if there are unconscious biases held regarding ones research or position in chemistry that are based solely on a photograph and a description of the position. Upon evaluation of this survey, we can create an awareness of these potential unconscious biases and set the direction for the creation of educational programs and seminars that will help mitigate their effect by bringing attention to their presence and allowing for a more egalitarian learning and working environment.en_US
