The author was introduced to Aikido during her semester in Japan. In studying the deeply spiritual and philosophical teachings of Aikido through its texts, the author hoped to be able to see how they are reflected in actual practice and come to affect the lives of Aikido practitioners. For many people in Japan, the practice of Aikido seems to function in a way that is similar to the practice of religion in the West: it gives them an understanding and a sense of being part of a tradition, and in some way provides meaning in their lives. The author presents the history and teachings of Aikido, and links these to the practice of Aikido at Hombu Dojo.
