All children deserve to feel safe, but unfortunately not all do. In order to keep more children in Kalamazoo County safe, we recommend that the Kalamazoo County Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Council implement an additional school-based sexual abuse prevention program in the following year. Adolescents are increasingly subject to sexual violence and pose a high-risk population in Kalamazoo County. ASAP: Adolescent Sexual Abuse Prevention is a middle school sexual abuse prevention program, will target sixth grade students ages 11 to 13. Program topics will include body safety, positive self-esteem, personal boundaries, how to react to sexual abuse situations, bullying, and safe dating. ASAP aims to increase students’ knowledge about sexual abuse prevention, as well as spark further discussion in the classroom and at home. In order to further understand the need, importance, and structure of an adolescence sexual abuse prevention program, we will also evaluate child sexual abuse and successful prevention programs. A greater number of children in Kalamazoo will be safe with the effective implementation of ASAP.
