Facebook vs. Snapchat : The Linkage Between Personality and SNS usage

Research has found that certain personality traits can be predictors of particular behaviors within society. The recent emergence of social networking sites (SNS) such as Facebook offer new ways in which individuals may interact with one another. Now, friends and relatives can communicate and share online no matter where they are at in the world, as long as they have an internet connection. As a result of this new social platform, social psychologists have investigated SNSs and how individuals interact within them. Associations between basic personality traits, such as extraversion, and active SNS usage have been found in previous studies. However, different SNS have been found to produce different results concerning what types of individuals they tend to attract and how certain personality traits are expressed. This study investigates the specific SNSs Facebook and Snapchat, and proposes that associations between the media platform and traits such as narcissism and extraversion will be found. Specifically, I believe that narcissistic individuals will report more active usage of Snapchat than Facebook and will be linked to bridging social capital. Other traits such as extraversion will show the same main effects. Another unique aspect of this study is that it aims to bolster the information on both males and females concerning SNS, as many samples have been skewed toward female participants. This study adds to the literature regarding SNS and personality, and offers an insight into potential differences in SNS and the type of individuals they attract.
