Abstract
In 2014, the City of Inglewood announced the City of Champions Revitalization Initiative that would bring in a new NFL Stadium for the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers, retail space, housing units, and more to the heart of the city. This paper will examine how residents, in the wake of the City of Champions Revitalization Initiative and other developments, are imagining the city of Inglewood, CA. Through ethnographic work gathered in the summer of 2017 from ten longtime residents in the four districts of Inglewood and literature on topics of development and its effect on neighborhoods, the question of what imaginations are present will be examined. The works of George Lipsitz, Mark Davidson, Loretta Lees and other theorists to develop an argument that the future of Inglewood is being imagined as a city framed in white spatial imagination and the displacement of brown and black folk as a necessary process in fulfilling this fantasy. The ethnographic work collected puts into conversation the thoughts of renters, homeowners, shop owners, students, and a police officer to think about what types of different imaginaries are present. The imaginaries around the city of Inglewood in music will be considered in thinking about how outside perceptions of Inglewood have conceptualized the space historically. Being a resident of the city, The author also considers an imaginary conversation with the literature around this work, and everything else that has been said in conceptualizing the space.
