The USS Oriskany CVA-34 has served with distinction through two wars, became the set of movies, and finally has taken a final and honorable rest at the bottom of the ocean. She was the fundamental link between the Propeller age and the jet age. The Oriskany provided the navy with new technological opportunities not available to them in any other ship. Taking advantage of a ship that was designed in wartime, but built after gave the Oriskany unique characteristics for her ship type. Creating a situation where the Oriskany remained in high use by the US Navy after her intended life cycle had expired. Thus, the Oriskany was used to test technology and tactics for future carriers of the US Navy. Her designs can be seen in carriers that the US currently maintains. Her continued relevance even as other ships were commissioned to take her place, has been the result of her brilliant design and the tenacity of her crew to perform at their best under any conditions. Without the Oriskany the US Carrier designs would be far inferior to what we have currently. Beyond her historical achievements, The Oriskany continues to contribute to tourism, research and the dive scene in Pensacola Florida. Invigorating a region that did not previously have much in the way of attractions that were not accessible from shore. The Oriskany has without a doubt become a legend in the eyes of naval aviators, and recently she has become a source of pride and intrigue for the people of Pensacola with her addition to the tourist map. Her legacy is still ongoing but her influence on naval development and her lasting influence on ship procedure has long been forgotten.
