Abstract
This is a retrospective analysis of febrile children, ages 0 <90 days, who Presented to the CHM ED between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2009 . Patients will be identified from medical records by the use of appropriate ICD-9 diagnosis codes and laboratory work-ups. We will cross reference patients by their ICD-9 code with two other databases; CIS and the microbiology laboratory databases. This will ensure that we will capture the rare instance when a patient presented with fever but had no laboratory work-up. Additionally, a child who had fever not detected in the ICD-9 database, but had a blood culture sent, will be captured on the CIS and or the microbiology laboratory database. We have divided the overall group of children in to two cohorts: cohort 1 are Children who presented to the ED with an ICD-9 code for fever and had a laboratory work-up performed, cohort 2 will be children who presented to the ED with a diagnostic code for fever but no laboratory work-up. Data abstraction will include variables such as age, gender, vital signs, investigations done and culture results.
