Abstract
I play with numerous themes in my collection of work: Gender, non-binary identity,
queerness, desirability politics, reclaiming image with “Selfies”… The 16 pieces in the
series: Hollister Boy, Femme in Lingerie, Queer Pt. I, II and III, Self Portrait as Boy Pt. I
and II, Figure in Green Boxer Shorts and Jeans, Figure in Orange Tights and Binder,
Figure in Green Tights and Jeans, Boy Femme, Pro-Choice, Self Portrait, Mirror Selfie,
Dissociative, and Selfie in Orange Tights, highlight the idea of gender as a social construct.
I see all of the figures in my work as non-binary, the gender identity positioned
outside of masculine and feminine norms. In decorating the figures with clothes and hair
I hoped to blur the identification of the bodies as “male” or “female”. I aim for people to
look at the bodies and struggle to identify them, one needs to use gendered terminology
to talk about these pieces. I hope to bring attention to how we label and categorize certain
forms of presentation. I use my own image in 7 of the 16 pieces—in my own self reflection
of my image, combined with my use of “selfies,” I hope to consciously or subconsciously
inspire the viewer to reflect on their own gender, their knowledge around queer
identity and terminology, and their gender presentation.
