The Fragility of Place
MetadataShow full item record
This project is a series of paintings that seek to explore the connotations of home, comfort, and safety in urban and suburban areas. Based on photographs taken by the artist in several different cities in Michigan, as well as images pulled from other familiar sources, the subject matter of the series includes basketball hoops, suburban homes, decrepit apartment buildings, low riding cars, and different combinations of the aforementioned. The title The Fragility of Place is in reference to the method of painting: the foregrounded, inexact line drawings of images atop flat washes of monochrome backgrounds evoke feelings of delicacy, nostalgia, and gentle mindfulness of architecture. This was created in rebuttal of the classical and academic naturalism that is pervasive throughout art history, and should be looked at in recognition of art movements such as Neo-expressionism, Modernism, and Color Field painting. This Senior Individualized Project is comprised of nine acrylic paintings on canvas, the smallest being 20” x 20” and the largest 36” x 36”.
