Abstract
I.D. Hosford writes to T.Z.R. Jones lamenting about his forced resignation from the ministry of Galesburg due to the machinations of mostly Methodist dissenters, who have nevertheless kept him somewhat financially afloat. Hosford recalls being “drawn out in prayer” for two years before seeing opportunity in Galesburg, while Hosford had expected to stay in Kalamazoo. Perhaps God had a different plan for Hosford. One of the contentions between Hosford and his congregation was a rejection of Hosford’s attempts to teach the congregation about “close communion,” a concept which they considered “awful.” Even after delivering six “discourses” to follow up on this mishap, Hosford believes they were to no avail. Nevertheless, he is redesigning his “discourses” to teach Baptist doctrine, making sure that infrequent churchgoers receive the education Hosford deems necessary. In the rest of the letter, Hosford explains that his aforementioned salary hasn’t been completely paid, so he is not able to pay of his indebtedness. It is no clear whether Hosford is in debt to the College, possibly regarding a scholarship, or to Jones himself.
