Abstract
After receiving a notice requiring him to pay $3.50 in interest on a pledge to the College, John Southard writes to T.Z.R. Jones declaring his refusal to pay interest on the pledge originally secured by the College’s agent, Samuel Cornelius, who allegedly used “over persuasion” to secure the pledge. Southard, a former Baptist now identifying as a “Spiritualist,” describes his religious beliefs after rebuking his loyalty to “the Kalamazoo Institute,” which he thinks “ought not to exist” due to his views of the worldwide destruction propagated in the name of Christianity. Cornelius had bypassed this conflict by approaching Southard during a thunderstorm while Southard was trying to save his hay from the rain. Southard’s anxiety compelled him to sign the note Cornelius presented him so that he could resume his work. Southard demands a receipt for the interest and says he will pay the $3.50, but demands that he not be expected to pay any more interest in the future.
