Abstract
The photolysis of the S1 singlet electronic excited state of HONO (v”= 1), an important molecule in atmospheric and environmental chemistry, is investigated using three color photodissociation and a 1+1′ REMPI probing scheme of the NO fragment to determine the even bipolar moments. To date experiments have focused on either theoretical characterization of HONO or detection of its photolysis and the OH fragment with LIF-based methods. This represents the first full analysis of the vector correlations for the NO photofragment, and it is found that μ (the transition dipole moment) is perpendicular to v (NO recoil velocity), in agreement with previous studies and predictions. The two other vector correlations, the μ-j rotational alignment and the v-j correlation are not easily interpreted, diverging somewhat from expectations. Speculations and suggestions for future research are made.
