Who is Worthy of Speaking English? Black Women's Social Position in South Korea
MetadataShow full item record
There are two ways in which black women are changing their image in South Korea: presence and the performance of Koreanness. As more black women come to South Korea, they create a more familiar presence in Korean society. If Korean people increasingly see and interact with black women, black women will be able to combat racial stereotypes. Black women are typically seen as having no marketable skills and so, if racial stereotypes of untrustworthiness and criminality are proven wrong, they will more often be accepted into different occupations. Performance of Koreanness is important for even white foreigners. As black women continue to practice Korean customs and/or speak Korean, this too will build an image of familiarity.
