Oasis: A Proposed Study and Review of Suicide Prevention Programs Amongst Young People
Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people, ages 15-24, in the United States (Drapeau & McIntosh, 2015). Suicide prevention techniques and programs are important for young people because they are susceptible to negative influences. A new high school-based program, Oasis, is my solution to the problems with current suicide prevention programs. Due to high rates of suicide in high school students and a lack of an all-inclusive prevention program, combining all proven prevention techniques, I created a new program for high school students called Oasis. Oasis combines teen-adult trusted relationships, peer leadership, screening, and education into a yearlong social-media focused suicide prevention program. It has been extensively established that social media can play a huge role in suicide and suicidal behavior.
