Abstract
This paper seeks to examine existing literature in regard to body image dissatisfaction and self-esteem among adolescents and young adults. In the first section of this essay, the author has included a personal narrative that depicts his own struggle with body image and self-perception. In regard to literary analysis, particular focus is given to the ways in which exposure to idealized physiques via mass media outlets affect internal development of the self. Body image and self-esteem issues are discussed in theory and in practice; specific topics include influences of social networking sites, adolescent development, mental and physical health implications, gender variance across these themes, and individual and macro-level suggestions for improvement in how our culture consumes and perpetuates physical aesthetic ideals presenting through modern media. In summation, the author substantiates research developed in the fields of psychology, sociology, and medicine in order to consider how internalized media can negatively impact human development, socialization, and feelings toward oneself.
