05 Patient Heart-- For Michelle Escobar ’16 coming to K was a sight-unseen 2,000-mile odyssey, and then the real adventure started—an experiential educational journey that, among other outcomes, yielded a pre-commencement job offer.-- 09 Learning to Look-- International reporter Mark McDonald ’73 describes how his K education informed a long and eventful career in journalism.-- 22 The Family Lucasse-- Professor of Chemistry Regina Stevens-Truss was awarded the College’s highest teaching honor. She shares the award with her widespread extended family—in Kalamazoo, New York, Atlanta and Panama.-- 26 Keepers-- Turns out that Kalamazoo College has a lot to do with the health and future of the Detroit River. Bob Burns ’81 and David Howell ’72 serve as Riverkeeper and Chair of the Friends of the Detroit River, respectively and respectfully. 33 Coaching Legend-- Kalamazoo College men’s tennis is nationally renowned for its decades of excellence. That streak started with a coach who considered himself first and foremost a chemistry professor. 39 Time Writer-- Journalist and magazine editor and co-founder Elizabeth (Blachut) Doerr ’88 is recognized as one of the world’s top experts in horology. Her international experiences at K helped put her in the heart of time pieces.
