Kalamazoo College has seen an increase in the number of reported sexual misconducts since 2014. From an HEDS survey taken from 2015-2016 in which 591 Kalamazoo College students responded, 103 students reported having had a nonconsensual sexual encounter. Kalamazoo College’s environment led to only 25 of those students reporting their encounter to the Office of Student Development or the Counseling Center. Campus environment has also led students to not feel safe enough to report these nonconsensual sexual encounters because the survivor did not want to get the accused student in trouble or have word get out. The small campus also creates a lack of able bodies that can constantly teach students about sexual misconduct and consent. With the recent hiring of Ellen Lassiter Collier and the launch of Green Dot in the Fall of 2017, the college is working toward and environment of students reporting nonconsensual sexual act while also trying to reduce the number of such acts.
