Abstract
Women and Gender Studies programs have been a source of educational empowerment for people across the country, but at what cost? My project sought out to present, critique, and deconstruct the narrow and essentialist academic discourse surrounding transgender narratives within the Women and Gender Studies program. Each essay is written and framed within both contemporary and older feminist and queer theory as it relates to transgender discourse. The project ended with more questions than answers, but with a fierce advocacy and suggestions for a more multifaceted classroom approach to viewing and discussing transgender discourse within the Women and Gender Studies.
