The real purpose in these plates was to establish a dialogue between viewers, to get people to talk about their eating habits and obesity as it relates to American life. While we are not the only country to suffer from an obesity epidemic, the fact that the population of very overweight individuals has increased so much in the last thirty years is cause for concern. The artist argues that large portion sizes have had a definite impact on our waistlines, and that food culture in America is such that it encourages consumption without regard to the consequences. To this end it would perhaps even be beneficial to be confrontational about the subject, to stir up ire in the viewer in the hopes that it gets people talking.
