Ridiculous : a Photographic Exploration of Gender Roles in Media

Artist statement: "Go ahead, laugh! This is ridiculous! Laughter may be the best medicine, but making light of something also allows people to see things differently. As Maya Angelou says: "It is good for a woman to keep her sense of humor intact and at the ready. She must see, even if only in secret, that she is the funniest woman in her world, which she should also see as being the most absurd world of all times." These photographs look ridiculous, don't they? Totally removed from their original context, the gender roles the media expects us to buy into become more ridiculous. Look through any magazine and you will find similar advertising situations. Let me ask you this: does Jennifer Love-Hewitt look ridiculous in all the advertising she does for beauty products? She tells us all that we can be more beautiful, like her if we buy these products. What about Brittany Spears on the cover of Cosmopolitan? Who is your favorite 'Cover Girl'? A "sexy" woman looks at you across the bar with that 'come-hither' look. Why? Because you just bought her a beer. What is the intended gender of "you"? How silly. But every day we are bombarded with gendered images, it becomes trite and unconscious. We do not think of these images as they are in most daily situations. What do you think?"
