In this paper, the author reflects on her experiences serving as the Assistant Site Coordinator during the Kalamazoo Freedom Schools 2015 summer enrichment program. The reflections are organized as a series of vignettes; glimpses into events that she either observed or participated in directly. These stories illustrate the different ways the five core components of the Freedom Schools model manifest when they are implemented in the program. The vignettes are then analyzed in light of and in relationship to current literature on critical progressive pedagogy, multicultural education, parent involvement, and social inequality in the education system. Along with her own feedback and recommendations for the site, this paper demonstrates how the Kalamazoo chapter of the CDF Freedom Schools program addresses social inequality within the education system by providing critical programs and interventions for low-income, African-American students in the Kalamazoo community.
