Abstract
"This body of work is an exploration of a new chapter in my life, involving an entirely new place and new experiences. The summer after my sophomore year, my parents and sister moved to Mississippi due to a job transfer. I decided after some thought and deliberation that I would stay in Michigan and continue going to K rather than transferring to be closer to my family. Now when I go 'home,' it is no longer 5 miles down the road from campus, but rather a 13-hour drive south. Michigan has been my home for most of my life, and truthfully still is in my heart, but I now travel south to see my family in a place that feels exceptionally different from home. I feel like an outsider looking in while in Mississippi, as if I don’t belong. This feeling is what inspired me to attempt to capture Mississippi through my eyes and gain a deeper understanding of this new place, then contrast it with Michigan, a place I know and love. I spent a lot of time driving around both states, stopping along back roads to take photos of things I found intriguing, as well as traveling to sites of historical significance from the civil war era. This body of work has taught me a lot about myself as an artist and as a person, about the land that shaped who I am today and the strength I have gained during the past couple of years. I’ve also realized that as different as my two homes can feel, they might not be too different after all."
