Abstract
With the increasing role that athletics have begun to play not just in the United States, but around the world, many athletes are looking for any advantage they can get to bring their game to the next level and open up opportunities to continue playing their sport well into the future. Collegiate athletics have become increasingly popular over the years, with the top programs generating huge revenues for their schools. One of the most popular notions that has been asked of athletes probably since the day they began playing their sport was to get a good night sleep before the day of a competition. The research in this SIP was done just to study that notion and look into how sleep effects athletic performance. A study conducted using Kalamazoo College’s men’s and women’s basketball teams looked at how different factors effect sleep and in turn how sleep effected the players’ performance. This paper will first discuss previous research on various things that effect sleep. From there, it will look at other studies on how athletic performance has been affected by sleep in the past. Finally, the results of the study will be discussed, suggesting the need for further research on the topic to be conducted in the future.
