Synthesis of Nitrous Oxide Using a Corona Discharge and Subsequent Isotope Analysis

Nitrous oxide is a powerful greenhouse gas which has both natural and anthropogenic sources. One of the natural sources of nitrous oxide is lightning. In this study handling procedures for synthesized nitrous oxide were standardized in order to reduce fractionation. This was done by developing and testing multiple sample handling parameters using samples of nitrous oxide with known relative isotope compositions. The analysis was done using a gas chromatography-isotope ratio mass spectrometer. Additionally, initial analysis was conducted on corona discharges and it was determined that the isotopic enrichment of the samples was correlated with the energy of the discharge. Also, the isotopic enrichment of oxygen and nitrogen were inversely correlated when the pressure of the reactant gas through the discharge line was varied.Administrator only at request of department 5/2/2016.
