Abstract
When a preconditioned flavor cue (taste or odor) is conditioned with a second flavor cue, conditioning to the second cue is facilitated (Batsell & Batson, 1999). This phenomenon is called Augmentation. Augmentation has been proposed as a potential threat to behaviorally-based interventions in chemotherapy patients. To date, all demonstrations of augmented flavor aversions have: 1) presented the cues mixed together in solution; 2) the cues have been completely contiguous, and 3) the target flavor has been novel. Each of these variables may limit the production of augmented aversions within a naturalistic setting. The purpose of the present series of experiments was to explore the spatial and temporal characteristics of augmentation.
