Absorption in Music and Inner-Peace in Music Experiences A Quantitative Study
MetadataShow full item record
Strong Experiences related to Music (SEMs) arc characterized as eliciting profound mental or physical reactions. The intensity of the experience is determined by how much the individual is willing to allow him or herself to be emotionally affected by the music, also known as absorption. SEMs have also been suggested to contribute to a long-term sense of inner-peace, or harmony. To verify these claims using already established scales, a questionnaire was created in the current study to measure absorption in music and enlightenment among those who had an SEM while listening to music (n = 52) and those who had not (n = 50). Participants who had an SEM also provided descriptions and other details of the experience. Though no significant differences in level of enlightenment were found between SEM and non-SEM participants, scores in absorption in music were higher for SEM participants (M= 52.2, SD = 8.46) than non- SEM participants (M = 42.9, SD = 11.1). This verifies claims that absorption in music may predict if an individual has had or will have a SEM. This moderately successful use of quantitative approaches to establishing a more theoretically applicable understanding of SEM, namely how they may be used in clinical settings.
