Abstract
More and more, Jewish young adults of the diaspora are getting the opportunity to visit Israel. Trips are organized by large organizations such as Taglit Birthright and Passport to Israel as well as various local sponsors like Jewish Federations, synagogues, Jewish youth organizations, and Jewish day schools. Home to the world’s largest Jewish population outside of Israel, many young adults from the U.S. attend these types of trips to Israel. This project aims to characterize the form of diasporic return that happens on these temporary return trips to Israel and investigate the meaning of “home” to participants. By integrating scholarly works on diasporic return and my own experiences with the Detroit Teen Mission to Israel 2015 this project argues that Jewish American return of young adults to Israel is a very unique type of diasporic return in that it can be understood as intentionally positive, temporary return geared at rapidly exploring cultural heritage.
