The Senses: Appetite, Control, and Excess

Over the course of nearly 12 months, I’ve explored and developed an evolution of concepts for my SIP work and other individualized projects. This development began during the spring of 2014 with my interest in the senses, engaging the senses, and how sensory experiences shape our lives. Over the summer and fall of 2014, I became further interested in the relationships between sensory experiences and food experiences. I was examining the concepts related to these aspects of our lives through the medium of ceramics—sculpture and pottery—and through multimedia installation. During my SIP quarter, I began to use the basis formed by the work I did around sensory engagement to inform my material studies, research, and final installation. The interest I had in the senses forming our relationship with food under the name of “appetite” directed my research towards Dutch vanitas, Italian Futurist work from the 1920s, large installation pieces like Judy Chicago’s work during the 1980s, and Beth Lipman’s contemporary work. During this time of conceptual exploration and research, I was also learning and developing technical skills with my materials of choice (specifically clay and glazes). Ultimately, the past year has been spent growing my understanding of installation work as a whole—as an entity and as an amalgamation of separate pieces in a space.
