A Guide to Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reporting at Kalamazoo College: A Look at the History and Future of Reporting
MetadataShow full item record
The original purpose of this project was to complete a greenhouse gas emissions inventory for the 2013-2014 fiscal year for Kalamazoo College in fulfillment of the American Colleges and Universities Presidents’ Climate Commitment, and then use this information to analyze trends in the production of emissions. This would have allowed for the research and planning of projects to further reduce emissions. Unfortunately, due to inconsistent data collection and reporting methods, the information provided by past inventories was deemed unreliable. Inconsistency in data collection was due in large part to a lack of formal guidelines for completing the inventory. Additionally, student researchers left little documentation of their research process. Considering the informal nature of past inventories, it was determined that it would be problematic and irresponsible to make any conclusions based off of data gathered by past inventories. After concluding that the original goal of this project was not possible, focus shifted to creating a guide to data collection for the emissions inventory in a way that would allow future researchers to more quickly and consistently complete the emissions inventory. With a more formalized process, data interpretation can be made confidently. While the end result of this project is a guide to creating greenhouse gas emissions inventories at Kalamazoo College given present infrastructure, there is still much that can be done to improve the inventory process in the future.
