Understanding Trepidation: An Analysis of Creating a Feminist Identity in the Third-Wave Feminist Movement
MetadataShow full item record
Over the last few decades the U.S. has witnessed a slow and steady decline in not only the participation of young women within the women’s movement, but the additional decline of young women identifying as feminist. In light of the broadened understanding of feminism and its histories, this project explores how feminist identity—primarily within the millennial generation—is being both nurtured and constrained. This project also investigates the trepidation young women experience around feminist identity first within the framework of the twenty-first century and second within the margins of third wave feminism. I discovered that the trepidation surrounding feminism falls into three distinct categories: the definition of third-wave feminism, a division among generations of feminists, and misrepresentations in popular culture and in the media.
