Developing Skills in Parents to Educate Young Adolescents about Early Sexual Activity
Early adolescent sexual activity has increased throughout the nation at an exceeding rate: 47.8% of all teenagers report having sexual intercourse, 10% report having sex before the age of 13 years, and 14.9% of teens report having had more than one sexual partner before being surveyed (Sherr & Dryer, 2010). This is a national crisis for the future of our country and its youth, with implications for educational, physical, and sexual development (Monaham & Lee, 2008). For minorities nationwide, the statistics regarding sexual activity are even more alarming. More than half of Hispanic (52%) and African American (66%) adolescents report having sexual intercourse (Sherr & Dryer, 2010). Over a quarter (27.6%) of African American adolescents report having had sexual intercourse with multiple partners. Almost one fifth (18%) of Hispanic adolescents report having had sexual intercourse with multiple partners (Sherr & Dryer, 2010).
